Dear Familia, In 2006 to 2016, I was privileged to be on the leading edge of the ten-year fight to recognize mariachi as an approved event of the University Interscholastic League. Years later, I’m admittedly sad that ballet folklórico—folkloric dancing—is still not a UIL-recognized event. It’s time for us to do something about this! The Texas Association of Mariachi Educators (TAME), a statewide organization of mariachi directors, helped us formulate the first set of standards for UIL mariachi. Sadly, no similar statewide organization has existed for ballet folklórico instructors in Texas—until now! During the past weeks, I’ve been speaking with Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa of Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin about the possibility of forming a statewide association of ballet folklórico instructors. Can I count on your help? As we quickly approach the end of this academic year, please take a moment to forward this survey in English and in Spanish to all the ballet folklórico instructors you know here in Texas. With their help, we’ll be able to formulate the standards by which UIL ballet folklórico might be judged, and their organization as instructors will help speed us toward our goal of UIL approval for ballet folklórico! For the sake of our kids, I greatly appreciate your assistance. Until ballet folklórico is an approved UIL event, they’ll continue to be counted as absent for their attendance in ballet folklórico events and competitions.
